On February-March in Chilik the Woodpeckers begin to drum. Males drum on telegraph-pole. Probably sound from old, dry pole is best on this country. Local people say that in Chilik Woodpeckers drum all around. Indeed early morning I have found Woodpecker after five minutes from the searching begin. It was White-winged Woodpecker. Woodpecker has drummed on pole not looking around. Unfortunately waking dog has flushed the bird. Other interesting Chilik birds are alone Siskin on birch-tree and a flock of Chaffinches. On Chilik locality on Djida's bush-trees there are again Blackbirds, Black-throated Thrushes, Mistle Thrushes, Great Tits and one male Eversmann's Redstart. But all these birds are common, not extraordinary. But I have seen also uncommon birds. Female Long-tailed Rosefinch (Last time I saw Long-tailed Rosefinch more the one year ago). The bird has leaked by specific sound of wings on flying “frrr-frrr”. Also I have seen Turkestan Tits. Representatives of both relative species [...... read more ]

Road to Chilik (Kuldja trakt) pass along the Tien Shan mountains to the East. Villages follow in sequence. There are no wild places. However I saw some birds from the bitumen . In the first place Upland and Long-legged Buzzards. These large raptors occurs over 15-20 kilometers. The road across a lot of little and large rivers. On one near Malovodnoe village I stopped and watched the birds. Flock of Lapwings (5 birds), two Green Sandpipers, pair Eurasian Collared Doves (common local bird) and the flock of Yellowhammers. Last days were very cold and birds focused near the water. All of the birds didn't fly far from the water. From the Lavar the roadside thickets of Djida (Russian Olive) are beginning. Djida on winter is a goodly feed to the all birds. On winter time probably to see a lot of birds on Djida trees. Today I have seen many Blackbirds, several Black-throated Thrushes, Jackdaws and Hooded Crows. There are many Blackbirds, Rooks and Jackdaws in Chilik. Sparrows mostly are Tree Sparrows, [...... read more ]

The birds' songs are all around. The irregular chirps of Tree Sparrows are heard mostly. The songs of Red-fronted Serins are more low and more melodical. Serins are ever so lesser than sparrows therefor they are more invisible. But they are a lot also. Loud Great Tits are not fly on the flocks but also flashy. Grey-headed Goldfinches are the best singers on this place but they aren't so numerous and more scary than other birds. There are a few Chaffinches. They have been washed in the river. Also Mynahs and Crows have been washed on shallow. When I have closed Mynahs and Crows have made hullabaloo together and I have prefered to go home. [...... read more ]

I didn't watch birds so long. Today I have gone to New (Republic) Square and have seen a little changes. February is not snowy and snow under birches and bushes was melted by warm air. There are much more Mynahs and Blackbirds. Saw Blackird washing in the puddle like at spring. The songs of a some birds are changed. Blackbirds not only chatter but yet sing. Greate Tits also sing more. Chaffinches, Bramblings, Great Tits feed in the shank leaves. Saw a flock (20-30 birds) of White-winged Grosbeaks. Grosbeaks are less scary than other birds. I have squated and Grosbeaks have not taken heed of me about ten minutes. One female have fed about one and half meters over me. Also I saw several Greenfinches. Greenfinches appear in Alma-Ata on early spring. On the spring you can hear everywere the songs of Greenfinches with specific whir. This year I heard Greenfinch's whir in the middle of February yet. Bramblings, Grosbeaks and Chaffinches have mostly fed but Greenfiches else gamed. [...... read more ]

There are not a lot of birds on the mountains. May be I have gone to mountains some late but more probably birds have moved to high mountains because the weather has been warm. Today saw Red-mantled Rosefinches, two Dippers (one White-bellied and one Brown), Great, Coal and AzureTits, Goldcrests, Eversmann's and Guldenstadt's Redstarts. So I saw all common birds but at a little number. A lot of Mynahs have appeared. This birds behave aggressive to other little birds. On home coming saw birds near Raptor Birds Sanctuary. People has photographed Golden Eagle (largest from our eagles) and Eurasian Eagle-Owl (largest from our owls). Birds from Nursery are pacific and trim. [...... read more ]

Today my intention is Redstarts. Eversmann's and Guldenstadt's Redstarts are a little scary birds therefore I previously marked places when I planned to wait birds. On two places I have wait about one and a half hour in total. Redstarts have flew off and came back. I have seen two Eversmann's Redstarts (one some lighter other some brighter) and four Guldenstadt's Redstarts (three males and one female). Guldenstadt's Redstarts males have played a game like a barley-break. On the side I have seen other birds also. White-bellied Dipper, Azure Tits, Goldcrests, Wrens, Red-mantled Rosefinches.
