Hiking to the mountains with the explore purposes. The upper border of the spruce forest is full snowy; the snow also lies on the eastern and northern slopes down to the bottom of the gorge; but the western and southern slopes are already completely dry. Birds were a bit. I saw the flying by immature Himalayan Vulture, the rounding Kestrel, the soaring Sparrowhawk in the lower part of the gorge, sometimes the flying by and perching on spruce-trees Magpies and Carrion Crows. In spruce-trees I watched Coal Tits and twice the little unidentified birds; also in spruce I heard the singing Blackbirds. The pair of Grey-headed Goldfinches was noticed. Also I heard singing Wren under the roots of the dumped tree. The pair of Blue Whistling Thrushes was feeding in the meadow, and then disappeared into the spruce forest; down the gorge I heard the singing of the other Blue Whistling Thrush but didn't see it. One of the two White-bellied Dippers I watched also sang the song, the same bird kicked out [...... read more ]

Ekpendy. On coming to colony of Grey Herons and Night Herons we saw the flying out Pheasants, both hens and cocks in total about one dozen birds. Pheasants flew from the dry meadow on which they fed to the reed thickets. Both Grey Herons and Night Herons already on the colony, some of them probably on the nests. Other birds we watched near the colony: Pied Wheatears, Kestrel, Tree Pipit, Chiffchaffs, Black-throated Thrush, Common Teal, pair of Turkestan Tits (one is probably hybrid with Great Tit), Turkestan Shrikes. On the midway between Ekpendy and Kyrbaltabai on the little marsh we watched three Common Redshanks and 4 Lapwings which will nest on this marsh. Then on the road to fish ponds in Akzhal we watched Green Sandpiper (on the roadside puddle), Kestrels, Pied Wheatears, Turkestan Shrike, one Isabelline Shrike, and the large flock (about one thousands birds) of Demoiselle Cranes. Fish ponds in Akzhal. In Akzhal we saw the first in this year Barn Swallows, also in the village there [...... read more ]

On the evening walking I noticed the Pigeon feathers on the asphalt; and I guessed that Pigeon was the victim of either Sparrowhawk or Peregrine falcon. And after 20 minutes I was watching the Peregrine Falcon was flying to the lodging for the night. So it didn't migrate yet. [...... read more ]

Chiffchaffs became the most numerous birds on the Square, they fed and sang mostly in the fir-trees. Great Tit picked the needles of unknown to me plants and brought to the hole in lamppost, probably to nesting. [...... read more ]

Collared Dove took the twigs to the nest building. Chiffchaffs foraged both on the trees and on the ground. One Turkestan Shrike. One male and two females Stonechats searched food in the grass; very cautious birds. One Bluethroat foraged together with Stonechats. Magpies flew by groups (on Sorbulak Magpies flew in group too). Female Grey-headed Goldfinch was building the nest on the pine branch, male was escorting her and singing the songs. [...... read more ]

2021-02-28
Uzunagach, Almaty oblast.

A rare vagrant species for Kazakhstan. On February 27 and 28, two birds kept in the thickets of silverberries near the village of Uzynagash (43 km west of Almaty). This is the sixth record of the Dusky Thrush for Kazakhstan. Records of this species are known for the Syrdarya, near the village of Dzhulek (October 16, 1927), near Almaty (February 16, 2013), as well as Ust-Kamenogorsk (October 14 and 16, 2016), Kurgaldzhino (May 7, 2020).

Pygmy Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmaeus)

Almaty, Aitykov str.

The first record of Pygmy Cormorant in Almaty in general and, in particular, during the winter. The expansion of the Pygmy Cormorant to the northeast concerns not only the probable nesting area, but also the wintering grounds. The nearest winter finds are Sorbulak and Taldykorgan (winter 2017-18, one bird each). In this connection, it is worth noting a significant number of birds in the Almaty (40) and Sorbulak (20) records this winter.

Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta)

Sorbulak lake system. Almaty oblast.

Twice the wintering of Pied Avocet were recorded on Shardara (7 birds on January 14, 2018 and 35 birds on January 11, 2020, B. M. Gubin, S. Baskakova, A. Isabekov).
