I was going to explore the buckthorn thickets in Ozernoe gorge, but without waiting for the bus, went to the Dendropark. Weather was overcast, snowfall was almost all day. Several times I watched Red-fronted Serins feeding on birches. In flocks of Serins twice I watched Siskins, once Grey-headed Goldfinch, and once Great Tit. I expected to see Mistle Thrush and Pheasants; and watched both Mistle Thrush (1 bird) and Pheasants (1 male, 5 hens), which were feeding under the acacia tree. I also saw Magpies, Carrion Crows, and one Eastern Buzzard. [...... read more ]

Day was cloudy. Birds were a bit, sometimes I watched Blackbirds and Hooded Crows, twice saw the Great Tits. Once I noticed Crows chasing the Eastern Buzzard in the sky. I made a few shots and looked at them, thinking that the Buzzard flew away. But the Buzzard didn't fly away but perched on the near Poplar. The bird was probably the same Buzzard which Vassily photographed at December 28, and which hunted the rats. Also I watched three White-winged Grosbeaks (2 males, 1 female) eating the dry berries of Common Dogwood which so long no one tried to eat. [...... read more ]

Before the dawn I came to the city administration; Peregrine Falcon was perching in the niche. At around 8:00 am the projectors illuminating the building turned off; at the same time the Rooks with Crows began to fly. Peregrine woke up but did not fly from the niche. I made the control shot for the record. At 8.15 the light was still no, I was very cold and went to the work, Peregrine was still in the niche. [...... read more ]

At 9 am the morning was light and snowy. Peregrine Falcon was in the niche. Perhaps it not leave the niche when the snowfall. It means that you can just wait until the end of snowfall and take photos with better light. [...... read more ]

Yesterday night at around 10 pm I went to the Republic Square to look at Peregrine, just to check if it there or not. Falcon was in the niche where it stayed to night last year. Also today and yesterday, past my window the Eastern Buzzard flew by with the escort of dozen Crows. [...... read more ]

Family tour to the mountains. Day was sunny in the morning, but snowy in afternoon. In the spruce I heard and watched Three-toed Woodpecker but didn’t make good photos because I careless came to the spruce. But it was impossible to do it otherwise because snow was knee-deep and the slope was arduous. Woodpecker flew out but I saw that it scraped the bark from the lower branches of the spruce. Also I watched about 20-25 White-winged Grosbeaks and 4-6 Red-rumped Rosefinches foraged in the barberry thickets, on burr, and on rowan-trees. On the mouth of the gorge I saw the large flock (about 150 birds) of the Red-fronted Serins. Other birds: 3 Carrion Crows, 1 Hooded Crow, 1 Coal Tit, 1 Mistle Thrush. [...... read more ]

Sunny and warm day. The birds were not a lot. We were surprised by Waxwings which were observed in spruce forests at altitudes up to an 2400 m, and more than likely they flew to the upper border of spruce forest. We saw four pairs of Black Vultures flying west. I guess that not all of them were the same birds. Red-fronted Serins were feeding in birch grove. Probably now they have enough food in the mountains, they will come down to the city some later. [...... read more ]

After three days of snowfall the sun came out, the snow piled above the knee. For the two-hour walk only I noticed only two Hooded Crows perching on the birch tree; other Crows and Rooks were observed only in the sky, in total not more than a dozen. It is not surprising since both Rooks and Crows feed mainly on the ground, no ground - no Rooks. For the first time in the Square I watched Reed Bunting. Very easy bird didn’t pay any attention to me, and hiding in the bush from the passing dogs for about ten seconds. Bunting foraged by seeds of some climbing plants. Also I saw seven Lesser Witethroats, all seven birds look very cheerful. Redwing was found twice. [...... read more ]
